Lighting use

Lighting is an important part of my show as I wanted the whole thing to be extremely bright and colourful and inviting to the audience. When filming the festival themed studio scene, I made sure to set up for filming in direction of the sun so that everything was well illuminated. My filming was planned during the middle of the day in summer so it was well lit all around but I had made sure that the set I created was definitely going to be lit and not in shade.

The music video clip had a very different approach to lighting as I wanted more intense emotions to be visible in that section when compared to the rest of the show. So I filmed the music video in the evening as the sun was setting in order to portray the drama of the song and the acting. However, I made sure that the area wasn’t too dark and ensured that the bulk of the filming was done before the sun had really set. I also wanted the blue light to be evident in this section as it links to the song title, the setting at the beach and contrasts well against the evening sky. I achieved this blue feature through filming the light up structures along the seafront as well as using reflective blue paper to streak light across Ryan’s face in a close up shot.

The final main segment of my show is the interview in New York. I filmed this using a green screen so lighting was a key factor. I had to make sure the screen was well lit to avoid shadows so the effects would work at their best during editing. I achieved this by using the lights that came with the green screen in order to create a strong artificial light that would show up well against the green screen.

Representation of Social Groups

Group 1

White Scottish Male

The artist Louis Dunham from my show is my first representation of a social group. I wanted to add diversity to the show without completely changing the actors that I had available to use.

Ryan is from a Scottish family and so he is able to do a convincing Scottish accent. This meant that he could represent Scotland in the way that he talks. The representation wasn’t just achieved in the way he sounded but also little words and phrases like ‘aye’ that are synonymous with the way that Scottish people talk. The costume wasn’t vital in representing the Scottish so I made sure Ryan dressed accordingly to a typical male pop star each time we filmed. This was through jeans and bomber jackets - very stereotypical young male attire that would fit any young English or Scottish man.

Group 2

White Female

My second main representation is the white female through Morgan as the presenter Megan Stanley. This social group is very common for an English television show and is representative of a large proportion of the country. Using a woman was a very important part of the show for me as I felt it was extremely appropriate as it fits with the rise in strong female presenters on the television. Morgan was perfect for this role as her natural down to earth nature meant that she would be immediately relatable for anyone watching the show. Morgan has a very clear English accent and so this complemented the group she was trying to portray. Her outfits were also chosen to represent the group. Her clothes were nothing out of the ordinary but were picked with a slightly edgy vibe to them to illustrate the slight quirkiness of her personality. The indie style Morgan wears is reflective of the music genre itself so this is another layer of social representation.
